About The Trainer

Steve Lainhart is a registered professional dog trainer and a 1984 graduate of the United States K-9 Academy, LLC., in Milford, Connecticut. With decades of hands-on experience, Steve continues to attend schools and seminars to refine his craft and stay current with the most effective and natural training techniques. His lifelong passion for dogs and dedication to their well-being define every lesson taught at The Family Dog.

Our Approach to Training

Training isn’t about dominance; it’s about communication, trust, and understanding. We teach owners how to clearly connect with their dogs so obedience becomes natural and rewarding. Each program includes essential commands (we call them polite requests) like heel, sit, stay, come, down, and finish heel, along with teaching the meaning of “no.” We also focus on manners, ensuring dogs learn not to jump on guests, pull the leash, or bark excessively. Our goal is simple: to help every dog become a well-trained, well-mannered, enjoyable family member that is a pleasure to live with.

Puppy Classes and Early Training

Early training is one of the greatest gifts you can give your dog. Puppies as young as six weeks can begin learning confidence, manners, and social skills through our Puppy Socialization and Confidence Building Program. Puppies that start young rarely develop behavior problems later in life, and early training makes the bond between owner and pet stronger from the start.

We know life is busy, so our training is flexible and appointment-based. There’s no rushing or rigid schedule; just quality time between you and your companion. Most owners are surprised by how quickly their dogs respond to this calm, consistent approach.
